WEATHER MISERY

Three people needed emergency treatment after lighting a fire to try and dry out their waterlogged home.

Torrential rain caused misery for householders yesterday, when their properties flooded and fire-fighters were called to pump out gallons of water. Some properties in Keadby were left with watermarks a foot high, after a thunderstorm. Other properties had several inches of water covering their ground floors.

Fire-fighters were called to Chesswick Crescent and Mill Road in Keadby between 1.30pm and 4.30pm, after yesterday's heavy rain.

A spokesman for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Three people suffered smoke inhalation after a chimney over an open fire blocked, causing the house to fill with smoke.

"One casualty was given oxygen therapy by the fire service, two casualties were conveyed to hospital by ambulance."

People reported floodwaters rising in about five minutes yesterday afternoon, following the storm.

One resident of Queens Crescent, Keadby, said they watched helplessly as the water came in under the kitchen door.

"Within five minutes it was three inches high," she said. "We couldn't do anything about it because it was just too quick.

"It's ruined the downstairs. The laminate flooring has been ruined, and so are a three-piece suite and kitchen cupboards.

Another resident also of Queens Crescent, said: "I knew there was a little risk of flooding, but nothing like this."

In nearby Chesswick Crescent, a resident had to cancel plans to go out, and instead tackle the clean-up operation at the property.

"I'm staying at home tonight and cleaning up,I've lived here 12 years - people who live in the area have mentioned the chance of flooding before, but it's not happened since I've been here."

A spokeswoman for water authority Severn Trent, said the flooding had been down to the intense rainfall.

"Sewers, gullies and storm drains can't carry the water away fast enough, Unfortunately, the effect is homes are damaged. It's our job to help try to limit the damage."
