Humberside Fire Brigade
2002 Annual Awards Day
The Awards Day primary function is to present the Fire Brigade Long term service and Good conduct Medal.
Royal Warrant
The Fire Brigade Long Service and Good conduct Medal is awarded by Her Majesty the Queen, who has stated that she is desirous of honoring those who have rendered long and meritorious service as members of the Fire Brigade in the United Kingdom.
The Royal Warrant in defining the conditions of the Award provide that those eligible shall be members of all ranks in the Fire Brigades or Aerodrome Fire Service maintained by the government in England, Wales and Scotland. The Qualifying period needed for the award of the medal shall be a minimum of 20 years full-time or part-time service in one of those Fire Brigades.
No person may be recommended for the medal unless it is certified that their character and good conduct have been very good.
The Fire Brigade Long Service And Good Conduct Medal
In
1949 the question of on official Long Service Medal for members of Fire Brigades
was raised and by 1951 a report
was submitted to the then Home Secretary James Chuter Ede.
The
main arguments in favour of such an award were that the only medal available to
Fire Brigades at that time was the then Kings Police and Fire Services Medal,
which was limited to a very small number annually. The grant of a long service
medal would also provide a means of recognition of long and faithful service.
The
report was accepted in May 1951 and submitted to the "Committee on the
Grant of honours, Decorations and Medals" who expressed the view that the
preferable
design should be based upon "Firefighting" rather than "Rescue
from Fire".
Finally,
with the sanction of the then Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, a draft
Royal Warrant was submitted to the Queen and received Her Majesty's gracious
approval.
An
announcement was made by the Prime Minister in the House of Commons, accompanied
by a White Paper giving the terms of the Warrant, which came into effect on 1st
June 1954.
The
Medal is 1.42 inches in diameter and struck in Cupro-nickel. The obverse is what
is described as ‘Her Majesty's Crowned Effigy for Medals', designed by Cecil
Thomas OBE
The
reverse, designed by Paul Vincze, shows two firefighters directing a fire hose,
with the surrounding inscription - "For Exemplary Fire Service". The
medal is suspended from the ribbon by a ring of one half inch diameter.
The ribbon itself, the official colours of Union Flag Red and Bunting Yellow stripes. Each medal is individually stamped with the recipient's rank and name. This is achieved by hand using letter punches to give a superior result than machine stamping.
